Welcome to the Transgender Lit Review!
My name is Danielle and
I am currently working on an independent research project about trans literature
and theory. Most of the posts on this blog will be discussing material that I
have read as a part of this project. This will include literature like Leslie
Feinberg's Stone Butch Blues, essays from the Transgender
Studies Reader, movies and videos surrounding trans topics, and more! As I read
each book/essay/etc. I will create posts that will focus on anything from the
main topics discussed in the piece, information about the author, or how the
theories involved may tie in to my overall project.
I am passionate about
queer and trans issues and I am super excited to dive deeper into these topics.
In addition to the more academic pieces I will be reading for my project, I
hope to include posts covering other topics as well. I love learning about
theory and seeing how trans people are being discussed in academia and reading
what trans authors and professors have to say, but I also intend to include non-academic
focused content as well. This could include posts about any other TV, movies,
or media I find in my life or on the news that feel fun or important to discuss.
Though most people today
have at least heard the term transgender and there are now more trans people in
the media, there is still a huge lack of content centered around trans people
that is created by trans people. This is why trans lit is so important to me, as
an English major I am constantly reading, but it is still very rare for me to find
a trans character in the books I read, especially in something I would read for
class. In addition, queer studies is becoming more and more common in universities,
but academic courses and texts centered specifically around trans issues are still
extremely rare. The goal of my project as well as this blog is to bring theory and
academia into trans lit and pop culture.
